The Difference Between PFCS vs PFAS Testing
Understanding the Difference
Between PFCS and PFAS Testing
Contaminants in our soil, water, and air are an increasing concern, especially when it comes to harmful chemicals like Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCS) and Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS).
What Are PFCS and PFAS?
• PFCS (Perfluorinated Compounds)
PFCS refers to a group of fluorinated chemicals that contain long carbon chains fully or partially bonded to fluorine atoms. They are highly resistant to heat and chemical breakdown, making them useful in many industrial applications but persistent in the environment. PFCS includes chemicals like Perfluorooctanoic Acid (PFOA).
• PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances)
PFAS are a type of PFCS that are man-made chemicals with specific functional groups (i.e. perfluoroalkyl group or polyfluoroalkyl group). PFAS (including PFOA, PFOS, and GenX) have been widely used in products like non-stick cookware, stain-resistant fabrics, and firefighting foam. Due to their resistance to breaking down, they are often called “forever chemicals” and are increasingly found in water supplies, soil, and even human tissues.
Both PFCS and PFAS are known for their potential adverse impacts on health, including links to cancer, hormone disruption, and immune system effects. The persistence of these chemicals means they accumulate over time in the environment and in living organisms. Testing for PFCS and PFAS is critical because it helps identify contamination sources, assess health risks, and ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
Testing is particularly important for water supplies, as these chemicals can seep into the ground and affect drinking water. Understanding whether PFCS or PFAS are present can inform decisions about treatment, cleanup, and prevention measures.

Both PFCS and PFAS continue to draw regulatory and scientific attention due to their widespread occurrence and potential harm. Whether you’re concerned about contaminated water sources, industrial compliance, or environmental responsibility, testing for these substances plays a vital role in protecting public health and the environment.
As an independent third-party laboratory with over 20 years of experience,
Engineering Performance Solutions is that professional. Our qualified team performs comprehensive
PFCS and
PFAS testing for municipalities, engineering and consulting firms, and carbon vendors nationwide. We help them evaluate treatment systems to effectively control PFCS and PFAS from drinking water and other related applications. Treatment system evaluations include conducting RSSCTs for GAC and conducting jar tests for PAC.
